What does universal strap mean?

A universal strap, unfortunately, does not mean that it fits all watches. What "universal" actually means is that these straps use an attachment system called "quick-release", which is the industry standard. If your timepiece uses the quick-release system, then all you have to do is match the lug width in mm, and you're ready to go.

How do I know if my watch uses a universal watch band?

This can be easily done by inspecting the strap itself. Quick-release functions, as the name suggests, by the use of a little spring-loaded pin to hold the strap in place. Check where the strap attaches to the watch, and if you see these little retractable pins (often on the right-hand side of the strap), then it is likely quick-release, and therefore universal.
